Due to insufficient interest, the Percussion Ensemble class has been taken off next year’s class catalog.

Performing Arts Department Chair and instrumental music teacher Chris Nalls explained that he and assistant band director Andrew Kuykendall proposed three new classes for the 2026-2027 school year, with Music Production and String Orchestra being the others.

The percussion class was meant to be a stepping stone into the music world for inexperienced musicians.

“One of the things that administration has consistently asked me for over the years is an instrumental music class for beginners that have never played an instrument before,” Nalls said. “That was our idea.”

While both the Music Production and String Orchestra classes piqued enough interest, Percussion Ensemble did not have the same success. According to Nalls, there were only seven sign ups for the class, much less than the required 30 to start a new class.

This left the few students who did sign up, including junior Alexis Barahona, feeling upset.

“I feel really disappointed because it was probably one of the classes I was most looking forward to next year because it’s so new, and I’m so familiar with Mr. Nalls and Mr. Kuykendall,” Barahona said. “It would have been a fun experience to end my high school experience with. I’m pretty bummed.”
